Round 6 Results

Rounds 5 & 6 brought a close to the race season in exciting fashion for the final year of Race City Speedway. The Redline crew had a weekend of highs and lows throughout the weekend. Times dropped even further, and it was a great end to what was a very successful year for the group.

Novice Race 1

  • #20 Ryan Lehbauer - 7th out of 14 (no times)

Novice Race 2

  • #20 Ryan Lebauer - 6th out of 14 (1:36.54)

Sunday with a new mission ahead of him, Ryan was able to grab a fist full of throttle and work his way further up the ranks to finish 7th in the first race. With one final race for the year, he was able to climb one more spot as he managed out sprint the #67x and #88 bike ridden by Sandy Sutherland to the line in what was a thrilling group of 3 that were within half a second of each other for the final 4 laps of the race. A 6th place finish in the last race of the year is a nice reward Ryan's hard work all year.

Middleweight Sportbike

  • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - 1st out of 7 (1:21.35)
  • Amateur - #11 Mike Yurko - 3rd out of 19 (1:24.42)
  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 10th out of 19 (1:26.69)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 12th out of 19 (1:28.12)

Round 6 brought out the crazies as the final day of racing at race city. Marco Simoncelli (looking surprisingly like Kevin) flew out to inspire us for the event. The middleweight sportbike race was at its largest grid of the year with a total of 26 riders of expert(7) and amateur(19). Craig had a new plan for this race, and quickly implemented it passing Rob Darlington on the #18 Yamaha R6 early between turns 5 & 6 to grab the lead. Once up front, he never looked back gapping the Brad Gavey on the #17 bike and Rob Darlington on the #18 bike to claim his first victory as an expert rider, running sub 1:22’s for the majority of the race including when he caught lapped riders. First expert win for Redline Racing! Not to be too outdone, the remaining Redline Racing amateurs also found some speed. Mike again dropped sub 1:25 times and was able to just outrun the #73 ducati of Jason Yuers to claim his second amateur podium of the weekend finishing 3rd and posting his personal best of 1:24.421. Richard found himself waist deep in a war between 4 bikes, and was able to grab another top ten finish, but was just outpaced on the final couple of laps by #19 Calude Bergeron and Tanner Taniguchi on the #2 bike. Kevin, after breaking into the 1:28’s the day before liked his new found speed and continued his tear around the track trying to tag onto the #75 bike of Ali Cohen. He finished in 12th position, with a new personal best of 1:28.124. A great race for Redline Racing, on the podium with a 1st and 3rd!

Middleweight Superbike

  • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - DNF
  • Amateur - #11 Mike Yurko - 9th out of 21 (1:24.93)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 16th out of 21 (1:28.75)

The middleweight superbike race had another large grid of 20 riders. Early on Craig was all over the #18 bike of Rob Darlington and on lap two attempted a pass entering corner 6 only to have the door slammed shut this time. While trying to avoid contact, Craig went down, ending his final race and weekend. Mike got out ahead of a pack of slower riders but was unable to catch the group of mixed amateurs and experts ahead of him. He ran a strong and consistent race to grab a 9th place finish. Kevin on the other hand was in the thick of things in a group. He battled hard with the #37 bike of riden by Hugo Breau for several laps, outpacing the rest of the group for the second half of the race. Kevin grabbed the 16th place for his final race of the day.

Senior Open

  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 12th out of 23 (1:26.55)

The senior open is always a very competative race as most of the racers are seasoned and there is no distinction between expert and amateur classes. Given that, Richard always has his hands full and in the largest grid of the year managed an exciting finsh in 12th place beating his nemisis Claude Bergeron on the #19 CBR600rr.

Round 5 Results

Novice Race 1

  • #20 Ryan Lehbauer - 9th out of 15

Novice Race 2

  • #20 Ryan Lebauer - 9th out of 13

In the Novice Races Ryan began to show his comfort on the Triumph 675, and was involved in some serious battles for all 4 races placing in his best finishes of the year. On the Saturday races he battled hard but just wasn’t able to hold off his nemesis Sandy Sutherland on the #88 GSXR750, and finished in 9th both times out of 15 and 13 respectively.

Middleweight Sportbike

  • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - 2nd out of 8 (1:21.23)
  • Amateur - #11 Mike Yurko - 3rd out of 20 (1:24.96)
  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 9th out of 20 (1:27.31)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 12th out of 20 (1:30.53)

The Middleweight sportbike race for Round 5 contained a number of battles as the groups of expert and amateur took to the track for their first big event of the day. Craig battled hard up front with the #17 Brad Gavey, but was unable to gain on the race leader Rob Darlington and pulled off another impressive second place finish in the expert class. With Tanner out injured, the remaining three amateur class riders were going to have to pick up the pace to put Redline Racing back on the podium. Mike took up the challenge and continued his assault on the amateur class, dropping into the sub 1:25 times to grab 3rd place podium in the amateur class in only his second round running in the amateur ranks. With a grid of 20 Amateur riders, Richard and Kevin were both battling hard to gain spots and points. The field ran in tight groups throughout the race and Richard was able to come away with a top ten finish placing 9th just ahead of the #19 bike of Claude Bergeron. Kevin rounded out the Redline crew with a mid pack 12th place finish, outpacing a group of 3 riders to the line.

Middleweight Superbike

  • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - 2nd out of 21 (1:21.24)
  • Amateur - #11 Mike Yurko - 9th out of 21 (1:25.60)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 16th out of 21 (1:28.54)

The middle weight superbike race for round 5 ran a starting grid of 21 bikes of amateurs and experts. Craig, Mike, and Kevin would fly the Redline flag in this meat grinder of a race. Again Craig would battle up front with the #17 & #18 bikes, but was unable to make the pass that would put him into the lead. All 3 Bikes ran together for the entire race pulling away from the rest of the grid. Craig finished again in 2nd just behind Rob Darlington and ahead of Grad Gavey in a very exciting finish. Mike again ran strong and tried to keep pace with the top amateur in the grid, while holding off the #25 and #75 bikes for the duration of the race. Mike finished in the top ten grabbing 9th position as the second amateur to cross the finish line. Kevin found some more speed as he ran the whole race with expert Rupert Collins, who was borrowing the ol’ SV in place of his broken DUC. The two went back and forth pushing each other around the track, and in the end, Kevin was able to hold him off enough to gap him on the final couple of laps and grab the 16th place and posting a personal best time of 1:28.549.

Senior Open

  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 10th out of 18 (1:27.57)

As usual, Richard and Claude Bergeron on the #19 bike raced wheel to wheel for most of the race. The two made their way through the pack and sprinted to the finish line to post a photo finish with Claudes front wheel crossing the line only inches ahead of Richard's giving the Claude the edge in this tightly fought contest.

Round 4 Results

Novice Race 1

  • #20 Ryan Lehbauer - 14th out of 15

Ryan retired the SV650 and unveiled his new Triumph 675 stallion for round 4 in hopes that he could pick up a few seconds and get a little closer to the front. While he did run faster, the Novice class at this time of the year is getting faster also and even though Ryan was able to drop about a half second from the last round, he was not able to put more bikes behind him at the finish. His shiny new bike does look good though!

Novice Race 2

  • #20 Ryan Lebauer - 14th out of 16

With a better finish in race two, Ryan is ready to battle his nemesis Sandy Sutherland on the 88 bike in rounds 5 and 6.

Middleweight Sportbike - The Middleweight Sportbike race is run with the Experts and Amateurs running together but being scored separately.

  • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - 3rd out of 8 (1:21.07)
  • Amateur - #199 Tanner Willcocks - 1st out of 17 (1:20.94)
  • Amateur - #11 Mike Yurko - 9th out of 17 (1:26.43)
  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 10th out of 17 (1:27.45)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 14th out of 17 (1:29.18)

The first big grid race of the day is always exciting and sometimes a little confusing for those watching as the Expert and Amateur races are run together yet scored separately. Starting grid positions are based on points with the expert grid starting in front of the Amateur grid.

Craig missed Round 3 due to transmission problems so being down on points, he started mid pack on the Expert grid. After a great start, Craig made his way through the pack but Rob and Mike, the 1st and 2nd place riders were long gone leaving Craig with an impressive 3rd place Expert Class finish.

In the Amateur race, the blue, white and red bikes ran in two groups. Tanner out front racing with the Experts and Mike, Richard and Kevin running mid pack. Tanner likes to lap with the faster Experts as his nearest competition in the Amateur class is running 3 seconds a lap slower. As a result of that, Tanner easily took the checkered flag for the Amateur race by a wide margin and also put most of the experts behind him at the finish.  Richard led the mid pack Redline bikes for most of the race when on the last lap, Mike came out of nowhere and passed him going into corner 1 on the brakes. The funny thing is that earlier in the day Richard and Mike had a detailed conversation about Richard's method of passing into corner 1. Mike is obviously a great listener as he pulled off a great pass on Richard and snatched the rock from Richard's hand. Who's the grasshopper now? Kevin ran a strong race and is chipping away at his lap times. Expect to see Redline's mid pack blue, white and red bikes challenging for positions closer to the front in rounds 5 & 6.

Middleweight Superbike

  • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - 7th out of 25 (1:21.51)
  • Amateur - #199 Tanner Willcocks - 2nd out of 25 (1:21.97)
  • Amateur - #11 Mike Yurko - 15 out of 25 (1:26.64)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 23rd out of 25 (1:29.63)

With no distinction between Expert and Amateur, this race, with it's big grid, is probably the most exciting race of the day! Craig after missing the last round due to mechanical issues, was down a little on points and had to start mid pack on the grid. Although he ran fast laps, he just had too many slower riders to get around to finish where his lap times indicate he should be. Still a great race for Craig finishing 7th. Tanner on the other hand, started in second place on the grid and never looked back. He defended some challenges from Brad Gavey and Mikal Zotman to finish strong and take second place. A serious achievement, finishing ahead of 8 Expert class riders in his second year of competition. Mike out in his first combined class race finished 15th after starting last on the grid and Kevin who continued to put down consistent lap times in a very competitive field finished 23rd.

Senior Open

  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 11th out of 18 (1:27.14)

Richard, with probably his worst start of the year, entered corner 1 in last place and battled his way back to finish 11th. A great duel with Shane Stickland on the 286 bike was lost on the last corner of the race when Richard lost his focus and ran way wide in the carousel handing Shane an easy position at the finish. A fun race with a few mistakes that luckily only cost a position and not broken bodywork.

Here is the on-board video of the race - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW_ZhgMIWPI

Open Superbike

  • #60 Craig Hubley - 8th out of 9 (1:23.75)
  • #99 Tanner Willcocks - DNF

Craig and Tanner decided to do a "practice" race to work on a few things and see how they could compete with the big boys on the 1000cc bikes. Craig, starting in last place had his work cut out for him. He ran a strong race but the power and straight line speed of the big hp bikes in the hands of the experts, was too much to overcome and Craig finished 8th after getting stuck behind a couple of the faster Amateurs that he just couldn't get by. Tanner got a great start and was dicing it up with Experts again and it was looking like he would get a 1st or 2nd place Amateur finish when on the last lap he was running fast into the chicane, he accidentally grabbed some throttle on the flop left. The bike stopped turning and he ran off the track into the front straight wall breaking his collar bone. While it is unknown now if he will be able to compete in rounds 5 and 6, other than the broken bone, he is ok and working to get his bike back together. A real competitor!

Endurance Race

  • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 8th out of 20 (1:27.56)
  • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 14th out of 20 (1:29.37)

Kevin and Richard enter the Endurance race on one person individual teams so it's more like an Iron-man race for them.  While not the most effective way to compete, they do very well against the multi rider teams. Richard wanted to work on riding as fast as he could while trying to use less energy as he found that he was spent after a regular 10 lap sprint race. Kevin on the other hand, just wanted to run a ton of laps to work on things while putting a beating on Richard. While his riding improved, the beating didn't happen as Richard was able to hold Kevin off. The Endurance race season is now complete after Round 4 because there will be no Endurance Race for the Round 5 and 6 double header.

The CMRA Endurance Race final results for Redline Racing for the year are as follows:

  • #4 Tricky Dicky (Richard Brown) - 7th out of 32 teams
  • #33 Peters Slap and Tickle (Kevin Peters) - 8th out of 32 teams
  • #11 Nuk'in Nubes (Mike Yurko) - 20th out of 32 teams

    Round 3 Results

    Novice Race 1

    • #20 Ryan Lehbauer - 13th out of 14
    • #11 Mike Yurko - 2nd out of 14

Great weather conditions set the stage for a very exciting race. Mike up front racing for first and Ryan at the tail end but still racing wheel to wheel. A great warm-up for the weekend of racing!

    Novice Race 2

    • #20 Ryan Lebauer - 14th out of 14
    • #11 Mike Yurko - 2nd out of 14

Another close race saw Mike finish in 2nd place after posting his best times to date this year. Mike got his lap times down to 1:31.67 in a tough chase for first place. Ryan struggled at the rear against some higher power bikes and ended up giving up a couple of places when he was pushed off the track during a failed pass attempt. Ryan finished the race with his bike intact and only minor bruising of his pride.

    Ryan sporting the fu-manchu!

Middleweight Sportbike - The Middleweight Sportbike race is run with the Experts and Amateurs running together but being scored separately.

    • Expert - #60 Craig Hubley - DNS (Craig did not race due to a broken transmission)
    • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 9th out of 19
    • Amateur - #199 Tanner Willcocks - 2nd out of 19
    • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - DQ (Kevin was disqualified for illegal tires)

A great day for racing and what a race it was! Craig did not race due to a broken transmission that occurred while racing in the WCC round in Edmonton. Tanner ran up front with the Experts chasing Amateur Todd Starchuck to finish 2nd in the Amateur class. Richard raced mid-pack and made a late race pass on Grant Smith to finish 9th. Kevin was involved in some close racing but unfortunately was disqualified for illegal tires along with a few other riders. Moral of the story, just because a rule has not been enforced for a few years, doesn't mean it will never be enforced.

Middleweight Superbike - No distinction between Amateur and Expert

    • Amateur - #199 Tanner Willcocks - 2nd out of 22
    • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 17th out of 22

Tanner was on a mission this race! He raced at the front of the pack behind race leader, Expert Rob Darlington and just ahead of Experts Rupert Collins and Brad Gavey. With Rupert and Brad on his rear wheel the entire race Tanner held them off until the last lap when Rupert made a pass but then crashed on the final corner, handing Tanner the 2nd place finish. Tanner posted his best times of the season to date - 1:23.25. Kevin raced hard and finished 17th while posting a personal best of 1:32.15.

    Senior Open

    • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 10th out of 15

In what's known by some as the "Geriatric" race, Richard raced hard and posted a 10th place finish. Richard likes to call it the "Gentlemens" race because the racers have the patience to race strategically and don't (usually) force passes that end up with bikes in the grass. With the winner posting times in the 1:18's, it's a seriously fast grid no matter what you call it.

    Endurance Race

    • Amateur - #4 Richard Brown - 8th out of 15
    • Novice - #11 Mike Yurko - 9th out of 15
    • Amateur - #33 Kevin Peters - 10th out of 15

Three members of the Redline Crew entered the endurance race, not as a team, but as individuals. Richard, Kevin and Mike, all ran the one and a half hour race stopping twice each for fuel and refreshment while posting some of their personal best times so far this year. Mike was leading the team due to his shorter pit-stops but ran off the track with about 10 minutes left allowing Richard to pass him and finish first among the Redline Crew. Maybe the young guys will keep up with the old guy next race. ;)

    Round 2 Results

Novice Race 1 (rain, sitting water on track)

    • Ryan Lehbauer - DNS. (DOT race tires, not safe for wet conditions)
    • Mike Yurko - DNF (crash in turn 3)

In very wet, slippery conditions, Mike was running near the front when he highsided in corner 3 and was unable finish the race due to mechanical damage. Other than getting covered in mud, Mike was unhurt in the crash.

Novice Race 2 (drying but track still wet with standing water)

    • Ryan Lebauer - DNS (DOT race tires, not safe for wet conditions)
    • Mike Yurko - 8th out of 9 - best time 1:36.78

After repairing his bike between races, Mike had a good start in Race 2 and was racing mid pack when he ran off of corner 1 but managed to keep his bike upright and re-entered the track in corner 3. He battled back but was only able to recover 1 position to finish 8th. Mike raced hard this weekend putting in some good times in a fast Novice group while dealing with poor track conditions.

Middleweight Sportbike (rain, sitting water on track)

    • Expert - Craig Hubley - 6th out of 6 - best time 1:40.30
    • Amateur - Richard Brown - DNS (rescheduled to Open Superbike due to a hole in his radiator from the endurance race)
    • Amateur - Tanner Willcocks - DNF - best time, 1:34:71
    • Amateur - Kevin Peters - 9th out of 11 - best time, 158.20

The Middleweight Sportbike race is run with the Experts and Amateurs running together but being scored separately. A wet race with much standing water on the track. Craig racing shagged rain tires, missed 5th place by a nose in a sprint to the finish line with Emerson Lefurgey. Tanner on the other hand seem oblivious to the rain and standing water. He lapped just behind the Expert race leader Geoff Gerbrandt and ahead of eventual Expert race winner Rob Darlington while being way out in front of the closest Amateur.  With a couple laps remaining, Tanner highsided coming out of corner 3 ending his race with a broken clip-on. Tanner was unhurt in the crash. Kevin's first race as an Amateur was wet and slippery. He raced like a champ and finished in 9th place without incident.  Richard did not enter the race as he was still trying to find a radiator to replace the one that was damaged in the endurance race the previous night.

Middleweight Superbike - No distinction between Amateur and Expert

    • Craig Hubley - 3rd out of 20 - best time, 1:22.54
    • Tanner Willcocks - 4th out of 20 - best time, 1:22.67
    • Kevin Peters - 17th out of 20 - best time, 137.63

The rain had stopped and the track was drying quickly. The Redline team worked frantically on Tanner's bike to replace the broken clip-on and throttle cables and swap out tires on both Craig and Tanner's bikes allowing the riders to grid up for the Middleweight Superbike race. Tanner had a great start and lapped with the leaders the whole race. Craig started further back on the grid and had to work his way to the front. On the last lap while racing in second place, wheel to wheel with Craig and Rupert Collins, Tanner had his bike go into neutral while setting up for the final turn of the race and both Rupert and Craig slipped inside to make a pass earning Craig the 3rd place finish and putting Tanner in 4th.  A very entertaining race to watch with the Redline team collecting a 3rd and 4th place finish. Kevin raced another clean race finishing in 17th.

    Open Superbike (mostly dry conditions)

    • Amateur - Richard Brown - 9th out of 14 - best time 1:30.00

Richard finally found a radiator and gridded up for the Open Superbike. While it's tough to compete on a 600 against the big horsepower bikes, the race was still very entertaining as he raced wheel to wheel with Matt Woehr and Alex Irving, both on 1000 cc bikes to finish 9th. Still unable to find a comfortable path through the bumpy corner 6, Richard is still a few seconds off his pace.

    Round 1 Results

    Novice Race 1

    • Ryan Lehbauer - 19th out of 21 - no times.
    • Kevin Peters - 2nd out of 21 - no times.
    • Mike Yurko - DNF (crash in the bus stop) - no times.

    Novice Race 2

    • Ryan Lebauer - 16th out of 16 - best time, 1:45.10
    • Kevin Peters - 1st out of 16 - best time, 1:32.07
    • Mike Yurko - DNS (his motorcycle was damaged from the first race)

The Novice races were exciting as always! In both races, Kevin started from the front row and never looked back. He posted some very good times and finished on the podium twice. He will be moving up to Amateur for Round 2. Ryan finished both races without incident after chasing the number 61 bike most of the race, he was able to pass the faster bike in race 1 but not in race 2. Mike crashed out after 4 laps in race 1 when he had contact with another bike during a pass in the bus stop, sending Mike into the grass where he tucked the front, ending his race.  Although the team worked hard to repair Mike's bike for the second race, he was unable to get it ready in time to grid and missed Race 2.

    Middleweight Sportbike

    • Expert - Craig Hubley - DNF - best time 1:22.71
    • Amateur - Richard Brown - 15th out of 18 - best time, 1:31,91
    • Amateur - Tanner Willcocks - 1st out of 18 - best time, 1:22.74

The Middleweight Sportbike race is run with the Experts and Amateurs running together but being scored separately. While that makes for a big grid, it also creates a lot of slower rider lapping which cost Craig a first place finish. Craig was running at the front in the Expert pack when they started to lap the slower Amateur riders. With Craig about 8 seconds ahead of the next Expert rider, he approached the last corner before the checkered flag and while negotiating a pass on a lapper, tucked the front and ended his race in the grass. A red flag was waved and the race was ended with Tanner Wilcox earning a 1st place finish and Richard a 15th place finish in the Amateur field.

Middleweight Superbike - No distinction between Amateur and Expert

    • Richard Brown - 14th out of 16 - best time, 1:31.31
    • Tanner Willcocks - 3rd out of 16 - best time, 1:23.66

While Richard traded positions at the closely packed back of the field, Tanner was up front on the hunt for a Superbike podium. The race was close and Tanner managed an impressive 3rd place finish against Experts. Craig did not race due to the concussion he suffered earlier in the day.

Senior Open (35 years old and over)

    • Amateur - Richard Brown - 11th out of 13 - best time 1:31.75

It what many call the "old man's race", Richard had a real battle on his hands. With 5 riders at the rear, all very close, passing and being passed was the order of the day. Richard finally settled in at 11th place right behind the smoking, oil spattering #38 Ducati he had been chasing most of the race.
